The Story Behind the Work:

The Chinese koi has always captivated me—its elegance, symbolism, and grace. Growing up, these fish represented more than just a pastime; they were a bridge to the serene, symbolic world of nature. But it wasn’t until my time at Sheridan College, during my first term in Character Design, that I truly began to understand the depth of my connection to them.

One day, I noticed my art professor’s tattoo, a large, vivid koi swimming across his arm. The design, though now lost to memory, left an indelible imprint—an expression of vibrancy that seemed to pulse with life. The koi was no longer just an ornamental fish; it was a living symbol, flowing in vivid color and boundless energy, a stark contrast to the quiet academic atmosphere of the classroom. This tattoo encapsulated not just the fish, but a deep, almost mystical vibrancy, a force of nature that felt both ancient and of-the-moment.

The brightness of that tattoo lingered with me, urging me to channel the koi’s life force and resilience into my work. As a tribute to that visceral inspiration, I set out to capture the transcendent beauty of the koi through my lens. I envisioned them not merely as symbols of good fortune, but as living, breathing embodiments of movement and tranquility, strength and delicacy.

The koi, paired during the autumn season, glide through the calm waters of a lake, their bodies a riot of color and fluidity against the autumnal backdrop. The crisp air of fall and the reflective surface of the water seemed to echo the natural cycle of growth, death, and renewal. In creating this piece, I sought to explore not only the koi’s symbolic role in Eastern culture but also the vibrant energy that can emerge when we allow ourselves to connect with nature and art in its purest form.

Symbolism in the Work:

  1. 1.The Koi Fish:
The koi, revered in both Chinese and Japanese cultures, are powerful symbols of perseverance and rebirth, able to swim against strong currents in their journey to the top of the waterfall, where they transform into dragons. Here, the koi represent not only the struggle and the beauty of resilience but also the constant flow of life itself. The pair of koi swimming together reflects unity, the balance between the self and others, and the interdependence that life and love require.
  2. 2.Autumn’s Embrace:
The autumn season, with its layers of vibrant hues, is a symbol of change and transition. The deep oranges, reds, and golds of the falling leaves mirror the natural cycle of life—decay, renewal, and the eventual rebirth that comes after loss. In this season of maturity and harvest, the koi swim as living symbols of life’s continuous ebb and flow, navigating the waters of time with quiet grace. Autumn’s shifting tones underscore the koi’s adaptability, as they glide through an ever-changing world, yet always alive with possibility.
  3. 3.Pastel Stippling Technique:
The stippling technique allows for a delicate interplay between light and shadow, creating a sense of movement that seems to transcend the physical realm. Each stippled mark is like a breath, a pulse in the water that makes the koi appear to float effortlessly, almost as though suspended between two worlds—the one we see and the one we feel. This slow, deliberate method allows me to paint not just an image, but a moment, one that captures the delicate balance of the koi’s serene elegance and the water’s fluid intensity.
  4. 4.Watercolor Paper:
The choice of watercolor paper imbues the painting with a sense of delicacy and lightness, allowing the pastel’s pigment to blend seamlessly into the texture of the paper. The paper’s absorbency echoes the koi’s ability to blend into the fluid, mutable world they inhabit. The water’s transparency in the painting invites the viewer into a submerged world of fluidity and calm, where the koi’s movement is both contained and free, much like our own lives.

Conclusion:

Chinese Koi is not just a painting; it’s an exploration of life’s rhythm—the interplay of struggle and serenity, of movement and stillness. It speaks to the resilience we carry within us, the way we navigate our currents, and the power of unity in the face of change. Through the vivid colors of autumn and the fluidity of pastel stippling, I have sought to capture the essence of these creatures, allowing the koi to become symbols of not only good fortune but also of life’s ceaseless flow and the quiet grace with which we must meet its challenges.

This piece is a tribute to the timeless beauty of the koi, the lessons they offer, and the eternal cycle of growth that we all must navigate. It is an offering to those who seek peace in a world that is forever changing and a reminder that, much like the koi, we are always swimming toward something greater—a place of balance, beauty, and renewal.
