Story of How the Painting Transpired
As the close of 2024 approached, I felt a pull within me—an urge to create a work that would encapsulate the chaos, the turmoil, and the eventual clarity that had marked this year. In a moment of quiet reflection with my cousin, we spoke of the trials that had left their indelible marks on my soul. In his wisdom, he simply said, “Bro, what you’re doing is true alchemy. You’ve taken the chaos and turned it into gold.”
And so, the seed for this piece was planted—an exploration of the alchemical process, not just of turning base metals into gold, but of transforming inner turmoil into something tangible and transcendent through art. This painting became my alchemical laboratory, where chaos was refined, transmuted, and ultimately crystallised into the brilliance of creation.

Symbolism: The Alchemical Transformation
The alchemical journey is one of refinement—of turning raw, unshaped matter into something of profound value. In this painting, I’ve sought to represent that very transformation: the alchemy of life, of experience, and of art itself.
The mortar and pestle, a traditional alchemical symbol, grinds together the raw elements of my existence—oil paint, brushes, and art supplies—into a fine powder. This powder is then poured into the distillery of the creative process, where chaos and artistry intermingle, awaiting their metamorphosis. The distillation process becomes symbolic of the labor of the mind and heart: the boiling of experience under pressure to extract its essence, to reveal its truth.
The Symbolic Elements:
- Base Left: The Fish Hook
The fish hook represents a love lost in the tides of time—a relationship that once anchored me in joy, only to slip away into the ocean of memory. I loved a fisherman’s daughter in Jamaica, and for eight years, my heart was tethered to hers. But when chaos came, the hook was torn out. Even now, echoes of that emotional turbulence stir in the depths of my being, a reminder that love is often both a treasure and a wound. - Middle Clover
The loss of my grandmother and my dog Terra shaped the depths of my grief this year. The clover, a symbol of luck and fate, represents the tender connection I shared with them. Their absence, though painful, is not devoid of meaning. They are with me still, immortalized in the green shoots of memory, and I honor them through the bittersweet knowledge that they will always be missed.
The cross speaks of faith, yes, but also of conflict. It represents the moments when my beliefs were tested, when those who preached righteousness to me did so in a voice of hypocrisy. It stands as a symbol of my inner rebellion—the tension between dogma and truth, between imposed beliefs and personal revelation.
The Alchemical Process
As the chaos of grief, love, and conflict is distilled into a vapor, the painting becomes a reflection of the transformation that takes place within the artist. The three wise heads symbolize the distillation of experience, knowledge, sorrow, and wisdom. These figures represent not just the intellectual, but the emotional and spiritual essence of my journey.
From the distillery, a cloudy vapor rises, swirling with the remnants of the past—memories, regrets, and fleeting moments of clarity. This vapor is subjected to the heat of creation: the process of painting, where every brushstroke is a decision, a refinement of self. It is in this alchemical furnace that chaos is purified into something greater.
The Final Metamorphosis:
The alchemical symbol is complete when the chaos, once raw and unformed, is transmuted into gold—the painting itself. This gold is not just a physical product, but a spiritual one, representing the culmination of an emotional and intellectual journey. The distilled essence of my soul, now captured in color and form, is ready to be shared with the world. The gold represents both the artist’s reward and the transformative power of creation: the ability to take life’s most difficult moments and transform them into something beautiful, something of value.
Conclusion:
Alchemic Rule: Chaos Into Gold is more than just a painting; it is an allegory of transformation. It is the manifestation of the alchemical principle that from chaos, something beautiful can emerge. Through the act of creation, I have sought to refine the pain, the love, the loss, and the confusion of this year into something of meaning, something of worth.
In this piece, I have distilled the raw materials of my life into a form that speaks to the universal truth of all human experience: the chaos we face can be transmuted into gold through the creative process. Art becomes the alchemy of the soul, the refining fire through which we can transform suffering into beauty and confusion into clarity. In this way, we become alchemists of our own lives—turning the base metals of experience into the pure gold of self-expression.
